It all started in 2005, when what was just a website photo gallery sharing a few photos between friends, became a small online assortment of photos of different people's gap years, from photos of their schools, or photos of them on Contiki.

This, back then, was called 'Gap Students Online'.

In 2006, the site got bigger, with more emphasis on news, and events, rather than photos. This was largely due to the way that Facebook had taken off. The site still had an online community, but there was little to do. 

Later that year (May 2006), Gap Students Online, started to become gappies.net, a decision that was mainly due to the face that 'www.gapstudentsonline.com' wouldn't fit on the bottom of our newly designed t-shirts!

In 2007, a new site launched, with sections of news, specific to England, Australia respectively. We also had things for the Saffa's and Kiwi's but the majority of people that used the site were either Brits, or Aussies. 

In 2008, as part of a University Project the site took a new angle, looking specifically at the users that use the site and asking many questions about what the site is about and what direction it should go.

After achieving a 1st, in the Uni Project, the site received a lot of interest from businesses and gap students alike. An old friend from the 2006 era of the site came heavily on board, and together Fred and Mitch have taken the site to where it is today. 

There's still a lot in the pipe line, as in 2008/2009 we have completely deleted the old site, and started afresh. 

Outside of the website, as a brand, gappies.net have successfully ran free events for Gappies at The Church, and in 2009, will be continuing that, with approx 4 free Church events each year, and also doing similar work with Walkabout, and TopDeck.
